You can bring your kids or your parents, as long as they know how to act in a bar with loud music. At noon on a Sunday it felt very inviting and non-threatening. It feels like a biker bar but there are hipsters all over the place (hipsters don't intimidate anyone) and a few kids. Plus, you can honestly claim that you only stopped in for "one drink" and leave semi-blasted. And they bring you a draft beer while you wait, so it a real value. The drinks cost $20 but it’s a "triple pour" served in a massive pickle jar.

Anvil pub brunch menu update#
The mimosa had an egg "mcmuffin", tater-tots, melon, and a strawberry (I'm sure I'm missing something). My bloody Mary had a bacon cheese burger, a pickle, a pickled onion, pickled okra, an out-of-this-world roasted Brussel sprout, a roasted asparagus spear, a pickled green bean, a big chunk of pepper jack cheese, a hunk of summer sausage and of course a celery stalk. Each drink comes with a meal tucked into the glass like garnish. The dirty word brunch menu consisted of three drink options: a bloody Mary, a mimosa or sangria. We sat at the bar and found ourselves looking at the "F- Brunch!" menu. That was really weird and very hospitable at the same time. The man out front insisted we park our bikes inside. It was 11:00 and the restaurants were just opening in Deep Ellum. There are over a dozen restaurants outside Anvil and I can assure you, you'd get better service at any of them.Stopped in after a Sunday morning city ride with some friends. The food here might be good but that alone isn't enough to save a place. When the food arrives, make sure I have what I need and that my drink (whatever it may be) is full. Greet your guests within 2 minutes, offer a drink, menu and then when you see me with my menus closed, ask what I want and put it in.

I'm not some sap who comes in alone in hopes of finding conversation through the bartender nor are my expectations exuberant by any means, just do the basics and do them well. I know how your job works, I can most likely do it better than you and all I ask if that you do one thing right and that's the fundamentals. I've been in the industry over 9 years from family restaurants to now fine dining. I half joked about the service to the guy eating next to me and he told me that he had waited 8 minutes before being greeting upon arriving. Within that time frame (10 minutes), I was able to google top 10 restaurants in Deep Ellum, map GPS coordinates to a new place and get all my stuff and leave before she came back. I went right to the bar and was greeted in a timely fashion, asked for a recommendation and never saw the bartender again. This past Sunday, I gave them one more shot. I honestly consider that, all things included/time wasted, to be the worst service I've had in my 6 years of living in Dallas. They (bar staff) were too busy talking with their regulars. Where was that hand before you dropped my food off? I then proceeded to watch every staff member walk past the order multiple times to the point where I had to get up and get myself. He has his pants sagging well below his butt and then upon dropping the food onto the bar, he wipes the snot off his nose with the back of his hand. At one point in my meal, I ordered a bowl of fruit. The service was so horrendous, we moved to the bar where it didn't get much better. She throws the menus on the table, throws them open and says "as you know these are all letters, letters make words and words make sentences and then you tell me what you want" all while smelling like the previous night's beer. It took our waitress 8-10 minutes to even come say hi. I went in for their famed brunch 2 months ago and sat down with a friend. How is this place still open? If it weren't for the social media attention for their bloody mary/mimosa brunch drinks, this place wouldn't be what it is.
